What Line Balancing Actually Means

Imagine a line with five stations. If one station takes twice as long as the others, work piles up in front of it while the other four workers wait. That slow station is your bottleneck, and it — not your fastest worker — determines your total output. Balancing the line means breaking the work into steps of roughly equal time so the line flows at a steady, even pace. The goal is a smooth rhythm, not individual speed.

Start with Takt Time

Takt time is the rate at which you must finish a stove to meet your target. Divide your available production time by your daily output goal, and you get the takt time — the maximum time each station should spend on one stove. For example, if you want 200 stoves in an eight-hour shift, your takt is about 2.4 minutes per stove. Every station should be designed to complete its step within that window.

Plan Your Stations and Staffing

• Map the full assembly sequence — from inspection through body assembly, gas installation, ignition wiring, testing, and packaging.
• Group work into balanced stations — combine small steps and split long ones so each station's time is close to the takt.
• Staff to the work — put your most skilled workers on the safety-critical gas and testing steps, and support stations where the work is lighter.
• Measure and adjust — track throughput and identify the bottleneck daily, then rebalance until the line flows.
