The whole point of CKD is to shift value — and jobs — into your local market. But to know whether your CKD program is actually profitable, you must accurately calculate the labor cost of assembly. Many first-time assemblers underestimate this. Here is a clear method.
Time how long a trained worker takes to complete each assembly stage — body assembly, burner and gas installation, ignition wiring, and testing. Sum these to get the total labor-minutes per stove. Start with realistic pilot-run timings, not optimistic targets, and re-measure as your team gains experience.
Divide a worker's fully loaded cost — wages, benefits, and overhead — by their productive minutes. This gives you a cost per minute, which you multiply by the labor-minutes per unit to get the direct labor cost per stove.
No line runs at 100% efficiency. Rework, material handling, and changeovers all consume time. Apply a realistic efficiency factor — often 70–85% for a new line — so your cost model does not understate real labor cost.
Add the labor cost to the CKD kit cost, freight, tariffs, and overhead to get your true landed cost per stove. Compare this against the fully assembled import price to confirm CKD delivers the savings you expect.
