Gas Leak Test SOP: Pressure, Hold Time & Pass Criteria

Every gas stove that leaves your assembly line must pass a gas leak test — no exceptions. But "test for leaks" is not precise enough for a production line. You need a written SOP with defined pressure, hold time, and pass criteria so every worker tests every unit the same way. Here is how to build that standard.

Why a Written SOP Matters

Without a defined procedure, testing varies from worker to worker and shift to shift. One person may hold pressure for ten seconds, another for three. A written SOP removes that variability, making your safety gate repeatable, auditable, and defensible.

The Core Test Parameters

• Test pressure — a defined pressure above the stove's normal operating pressure, suited to your gas type (LPG or natural gas).
• Hold time — a fixed duration, commonly several tens of seconds, during which pressure must remain stable.
• Pass criteria — a maximum allowable pressure drop; anything beyond it is a fail and the unit is rejected for rework.

Documenting and Training

Post the SOP at the test station, train every tester to follow it, and keep a log of results. Records matter — they prove your stoves were tested, and they help you trace any field failure back to a batch.
