The foundation is time. Measure how long a trained worker takes to assemble one stove, from component inspection to final testing. In a well-designed line, this might be measured in minutes per unit. Time is the input every other calculation depends on.
Multiply the assembly time by the worker's hourly wage to get the direct labor cost. If a worker earns the local equivalent of, say, $1.50 per hour and assembles a stove in 30 minutes, the direct labor is $0.75 per stove. Compare hourly wages versus piece rates — piece rates can improve output, but only if quality is held to the SOP.
Direct wages are not the whole picture. Add your share of supervision, facility costs, utilities, equipment depreciation, and quality control. These overheads often nearly double the direct labor figure, so do not omit them.
