A thermocouple is not a universal part you can swap casually. It produces a small electrical signal — measured in millivolts — that keeps the gas valve's flame-failure device open. If the thermocouple's output does not match what the valve expects, the stove either will not stay lit or will not shut off when it should. When heated by the flame, the thermocouple's hot junction generates a small voltage — typically around 20 to 35 millivolts in a standard gas stove. That tiny voltage powers the electromagnet in the flame-failure device (FFD) inside the valve, holding the gas supply open. Remove the flame and the voltage drops, the magnet releases, and the gas cuts off.
The valve is designed around a specific output range. A thermocouple that produces too little voltage will let the valve drop out — the burner refuses to stay lit, a frustrating call-back. One that produces the wrong profile may fail to release promptly when the flame dies, which is a genuine safety risk. The part number and millivolt rating must align with the valve.
