When a gas burner starts burning unevenly — one side strong, another side weak, or a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one — the flame spreader is usually the culprit. For repair shops and parts distributors, this is one of the most common service calls in the trade. Here is how to diagnose it.

What the Flame Spreader Does

The flame spreader sits between the nozzle and the burner cap. It takes the gas-air mixture and pushes it out through a ring of small ports, creating an even flame. When those ports stay clean and open, the burner burns efficiently. When they clog, the flame becomes uneven and wasteful.

The Three Most Common Causes

• Food and grease buildup — boiled-over food carbonizes inside the ports and blocks gas flow.
• Corrosion — moisture and repeated heating oxidize the aluminum surface, narrowing or sealing ports over time.
• Mechanical damage — a dropped or bent spreader deforms the ports and distorts the flame pattern.

How to Diagnose

Light the burner and watch the flame. A clean, healthy spreader produces a uniform blue ring of flame at every port. Uneven height, orange tips, or dead zones indicate blockage. Remove the cap and spreader, hold the spreader up to a light, and look through the ports — any that are dark are clogged.

Clean or Replace?
